The Department of Geography and Regional Planning in Olabisi Onabanjo University was established in 1983 to provide a comprehensive training in Geography, Environment and Urban as well as Regional Planning that would ensure a high level of competence of our graduates and also increase their flexibility in fitting into diverse careers in research and industry. The programme is also geared towards providing solid academic base for the pursuit of higher degrees (M.Sc., M. Phil. and Ph.D.). Notable achievements have been made over the years in these directions. In fact a number of our products have completed M.Sc. Degrees in Transport at the Olabisi Onabanjo University and other Postgraduates programmes in other Universities.

The current honours degree programme in Geography and Regional Planning has been drawn up in line with the NUC minimum standards. This was informed by the need to develop a research culture in the Department in consonance with current trends in industry and public service/parastatals that are having direct relevance to the peculiar needs of the people of Ogun State in particular and Nigeria in general. Thus, since inception, students admitted into the department followed a programme of study scheduled over a period of three or four years as stipulated by the NUC approved Minimum Academic Standards (MACS) in Social Science for all Nigerian Universities, July 1989, pp: 60-64.
