The Department of Political Science came into being in January 1983 at the inception of the University with the mission of providing training leading to the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. However, in response to the demands and the challenges of the modern society, the mission of the Department has expanded in recent years particularly since the 1990s with the mounting of new programmes at the sub-degree, degree and graduate levels. Essentially, against the backdrop of the philosophy of the University , the Department is poised towards providing quality education and disseminating knowledge needed by the individuals in developing self –confidence and appropriate initiatives in coping with the challenges of the contemporary globalized complex society. This philosophy reflects in the specific objectives of the various programmes mounted by the Department.

The Department also has a Graduate Division that is committed to the advancement of knowledge through professional training and research. Currently, it runs a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDPA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA) Programmes on full and part time basis with the commitment of running in the nearest future academic Masters and Doctorates degrees .

In terms of research, the Department is highly committed to the promotion of scholarship and knowledge through scholarly publications for use at Undergraduate and Graduate levels. The results of this broadly based Department have been the high quality graduates, recognition, strength and distinctiveness that have come to be associated with the Department within and outside the University.
