The Department of Sociology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Started as a constituent unit of the former Faculty of Social and Management Sciences in 1983. At its inception, the Department had the opportunity of having Dr. Olatunji Yinusa Oyeneye (then a Senior Lecturer) as the foundation Head of Department.

It is necessary to note that, although students and staff were very few then, over the years, the Department had recorded phenomenal growth. As a matter of fact, the Department can now boast of 1200 students and 15 staff. The Sociology Department has produced a number of students who are presently occupying important positions both in the public and private sectors of the economy. It is interesting to note that a good number of the staff in the department are its product.

The Department’s post graduate programme commenced in 1995 and a number of students have been produced through it. It is hoped that the programme will endure and prosper with the growth and development of the University.

Besides, the Department started a Degree programme in Industrial and Labour Relations in 2000. The first batch of students are now at their 400 level. The programme has about 2,300 students for both regular and part-time programmes. The Department is also preparing another post graduate programme (Master in Industrial Relation and Human Resource Management) to provide opportunities for further studies for our ever growing graduates. The Department is growing in all ramifications to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
